Y-Talk Ignites: Youth Lead the Conversation for a Just and Climate-Resilient Bangladesh
On 20 July 2025, a quiet floor of the ICT Tower transformed into a vibrant hub of energy, urgency, and youth-led vision. The Young Climate Action Network (YOUCAN) convened its inaugural Y-Talk: Youth Dialogue for Climate Action, bringing together a carefully selected group of passionate youth leaders, environmental thinkers, and community voices for an afternoon that was anything but ordinary.
The dialogue was powerfully anchored by the presence of YOUCAN’s leadership, with both the Executive Director (ED) and Deputy Executive Director (DED) actively engaging with participants throughout the session. Their presence reflected the organization’s hands-on, youth-driven ethos. In addition, several members of the National Executive Board joined the event, offering strategic insights, mentoring emerging advocates, and reinforcing YOUCAN’s commitment to inclusive, ground-up climate action.
Not Just a Dialogue—A Declaration of Intent
More than a conversation, Y-Talk emerged as a space where lived experience met bold imagination. Youth from universities, grassroots collectives, and advocacy platforms discussed the intersecting injustices of climate change—mental health challenges, educational disruption, livelihood instability—and connected them with personal stories from the frontlines of flood-prone regions like Kurigram, Sunamganj, and the coastal belt.
The dialogue didn’t stop at critique. It evolved into a vision-setting arena, where ideas turned into action plans. Discussions ranged from embedding climate education in formal curricula to demanding accountability from political actors through youth-inclusive manifestos.
A Moment of Action: What Comes Next?
The most resonant moment of the day came during the Call to Action segment. Rather than waiting for change, participants chose to be the change—committing to localized climate campaigns, awareness drives in their districts, and policy dialogues with municipal and national actors. Some pledged to start school-based climate clubs; others proposed open letters to party leaders demanding climate-smart election promises.
The energy was electric. The purpose was clear. Bangladeshi youth are no longer asking for a seat at the table—they’re building their own.
This Was Just the Beginning
Y-Talk is not a one-time dialogue. It is the beginning of a youth-led climate discourse movement, one that YOUCAN plans to expand across Bangladesh—city by city, district by district. With each session, the goal is to amplify unheard voices, localize global challenges, and drive collective action rooted in justice, equity, and ambition.
