Gobeshona Global Conference 5: Empowering Early Career Climate Researchers
Building Youth Capacity on Adaptation and Loss & Damage
The Young Climate Action Network (YOUCAN) proudly participated in the “Capacity Building for Early Career Researchers: Understanding Adaptation and Loss & Damage” program, held as part of the prestigious Gobeshona Global Conference 5 (GGC5) on 29–30 April 2025 at Lakeshore Heights, Dhaka. This flagship event was hosted by the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD), with the support of Germanwatch, ADAMS, and several national and international partners.
Over two impactful days, early career researchers, climate practitioners, and youth organizations came together to deepen their understanding of critical issues shaping global climate action—specifically, Adaptation and Loss & Damage (L&D). The sessions emphasized practical, context-driven approaches to climate resilience, especially through the lens of Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) and the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA).
As a recognized Youth Partner, YOUCAN actively contributed to key discussions, workshops, and peer learning sessions, emphasizing the importance of youth inclusion in climate research and adaptation strategies. Our representatives shared insights from grassroots mobilization, community engagement, and youth-led policy advocacy across climate-vulnerable regions in Bangladesh.
Highlights from the program included:
- Engaging technical workshops on L&D finance and adaptation mechanisms
- Simulation exercises exploring local adaptation strategies
- High-level reflections on bridging the GGA with LLA initiatives
- Interactive group discussions focused on intergenerational and interdisciplinary collaboration
YOUCAN also took part in the final day’s plenary, contributing to the collective reflection on the journey “From Bellagio to Action,” reinforcing our shared commitment to translating knowledge into tangible, community-based solutions.
This participation aligns with YOUCAN’s broader mission to equip young people with the tools, knowledge, and networks to lead climate resilience efforts at both local and global levels. We firmly believe that investing in early career researchers—particularly from climate-vulnerable communities—is essential to achieving just, inclusive, and effective adaptation outcomes.
